Quantity About the author: W. Warren Wagar (1932-2004), historian and futurist, was a specialist in alternative world futures and an expert in the work of science fiction writer H. G. Wells. Wagar served as history professor for 31 years at Binghamton University, State University of New York. His courses on the "History of the Future" and "World War III" earned him the title of Distinguished Teaching Professor at Binghamton. Wagar was the author of 18 books, including, H. G. Wells and the World State (1961); The City of Man: Prophecies of a World Civilization in Twentieth-Century Thought (1967), Building the City of Man: Outlines of a World Civilization (1971); A Short History of the Future (1989, rev. 1992 and 1999), a narrative account of imagined events of the next 200 years, and Memoirs of the Future (2001), his autobiography. In 1984 Wagar began writing science fiction, publishing nine stories in various magazines and anthologies. In addition, throughout his career, he contributed various articles to The Futurist, served on the editorial board for Futures Research Quarterly, and spoke at various World Future Society conferences. Wagar's last book, H.G. Wells: Traversing Time (2004), traces Wells's philosophies on utopia, war, romance, education, and modernism, focusing on his nonfiction as well as his science fiction.
