In 1997 the Southern Baptists launched an evangelism program in America called ‘Celebrate Jesus 2000’. Here is their brochure, in part, inspired by Jay Gary’s writing in The Star of 2000.
The Dawn of New Millennium Deserves the Greatest Celebration in America’s History. A celebration that every man, woman and child will remember for the rest of their lives. A celebration that starts now and lasts for all eternity. Introducing the Greatest Reason to Celebrate the New Millennium…
Celebrate Jesus 2000
Of all the people on earth, none have more reason to celebrate than God’s people. Because we know that the Christ who come 2,000 years ago impacts more than just our calendars. He is the cornerstone of human history. The author and finisher of our faith. And what better way to celebrate our gratitude than to introduce him to others? Watch for more information about an evangelism campaign that will reach every last person in America. And get ready to join the celebration.
How to Join the Celebration
Celebrate Jesus 2000 will not only impact this nation; it will also transform your church. By placing your laypeople in positions that will grow their faith and deepen their character. And creating the energy and commitment that only comes when everyone is united by a common goal. Look for information to come on each of the movements four components.
Prayer
Unless God is in it, even an evangelistic outreach this vast is doomed to failure. That’s why Celebrate Jesus 2000 will mobilize God’s people to pray like they’ve never prayed before. Interceding for every person in America by name. Organizing prayer marches. And promoting special sessions of prayer and fasting.
Personal Witnessing
Working door-to-door, participants in Celebrate Jesus 2000 will make a brief gospel presentation to every home in the nation. They will also conduct a survey of every home, gathering vital information on unchurched individuals, which will be used in future follow-up efforts.
Proclamation
The greatest celebration in history will peak in the spring of 1999, with simultaneous revivals and area crusades in every community, followed by a central crusade to be broadcast nationwide in the fall. Celebrate Jesus 2000 will also coordinate with the YouthLink project to fill stadiums throughout America with youth rallies on New Year’s Eve, 1999.
Preservation
Reaching the entire nation for Christ by the year 2000 is a massive undertaking. But it’s only the beginning of a program of follow-up and discipleship that will go on for years to come. Every new convert must be baptized, congregationalized, and trained. And church planting will be a central part of the movement from beginning to end.
